Is 40 too old for an Apprenticeship?
The short answer is absolutely not.
At Talk training we hear it frequently: “Am I too old for an apprenticeship at 30, 40 or 50?” The resounding answer is NO! In fact, any age can be the perfect time to pursue an apprenticeship, it just all depends on what you want to achieve.
Let’s dispel this myth once and for all. Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers. They’re a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to gain practical skills, switch careers, work for a promotion or up-skill in their current field. While some may picture a fresh-faced teenager, the reality is that apprentices come from all walks of life and all age groups.
Why 40 (and beyond) can be a great time for an Apprenticeship:
- Life Experience: You bring a wealth of experience to the table. You’ve likely developed valuable transferable skills like time management, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication – skills that are highly sought after by employers. These aren’t things you learn overnight; they’re honed through life experiences.
- Clarity of Purpose: At 40, you probably have a clearer understanding of your career goals and what you’re passionate about. This focused approach can make you a more dedicated and motivated apprentice. You’re not just exploring options; you’re actively pursuing a specific path.
- Maturity and Professionalism: Your maturity and professional approach can set you apart. Employers often appreciate the reliability and commitment that comes with life experience.
- Career Change Opportunity: Feeling stuck in your current career? An apprenticeship can be the perfect springboard to a new and fulfilling career path. It allows you to gain the necessary skills and experience while earning a wage.
- Upskilling and Career Advancement: Even if you’re not looking for a complete career change, an apprenticeship can help you acquire new skills and advance in your current field. It demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and can make you a more valuable asset to your employer.
Don’t let age hold you back:
The biggest barrier to pursuing an apprenticeship at 40 is often self-doubt. Don’t let the fear of being “too old” hold you back from achieving your goals. Remember:
- Age is just a number: Your passion, drive, and willingness to learn are far more important than your age.
- Focus on your strengths: Consider your transferable skills, work experience and life experience.
- Network and connect: Talk to people that have already started an apprenticeship in the industry you’re interested in. Hear about their experiences. We regularly share case studies and testimonials on social media.
- I don’t have enough time: Lots of our learners have families with busy lives and still successfully complete their apprenticeships. We offer lots of support and will help you every step of the way.
Case Study:
Cerian Clatworthy, is a Finance Manager with the NHS Shared Services and has successfully completed the Level 3, 4 and 5 ILM apprenticeship qualifications with us at Talk training.
“I couldn’t have completed it without Andy, my assessor. The support and encouragement I received from the whole team really helped me. If I was to give advice to another learner, I would say that you just need to do a little bit but often so that before you know it you have finished.”
We deliver apprenticeships in a wide range of subject areas including; Business Administration, Leadership and Management, Customer Service, Hospitality and lots more, so there is likely a qualification suitable for you and your job role or career aspirations.
In summary, if you’re considering an apprenticeship at 40, we’d encourage you to go for it! It’s a fantastic opportunity to invest in yourself, learn new skills, and pursue a fulfilling career.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old. Embrace the opportunity and make it happen!
