The Young Recruits Programme (YRP) is a government funded scheme providing young people aged 16-24 with an opportunity to complete an apprenticeship with a training provider whilst working for a company. The company also receives funding towards the recruit’s wages.

Last year the programme brought together Melissa Hale (a recruit), New Directions (the employer) and Talk training (the training provider).  Melissa undertook a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration, whilst working as a HR Administrator in New Direction’s head office in Cardiff.

Angela Smyth, HR Officer at New Directions was very pleased with the programme and told us:

We took Melissa on as a mutually beneficial opportunity for both her and New Directions and it’s proved to be very successful all round.

Mel has been a fantastic asset to the team and once her NVQ got underway she was very determined to evidence all that she’s been involved with and more.

Due to the success of Mel’s role other managers were keen to take on someone through YRP, we have two other recruits; Rachel in our Compliance Team and Melissa in ND Care & Support, Bryn Mawr.

Mel is now looking to go on to complete a HR qualification so the appropriate route is now being identified.

Melissa had this to say about her experience:

The young recruits programme gave me a brilliant opportunity to work while also working towards a qualification in business administration level two.

I’ve learnt a lot of  valuable knowledge and skills while growing in confidence over the past year in HR which I wouldn’t have gained in a classroom environment, I am very grateful of the opportunity I was given along with the support of my team and assessor.

Now I have completed the Young Recruits Programme I have decided to continue in HR and will hopefully be able to further my experience and gain another qualification. I would recommend this programme as it’s a great way to get your foot onto the job ladder along with adding value to your CV.”

Talk training is pleased to continue its work with the Young Recruits Programme. If you have recently recruited a young person aged 16-24 years or are considering doing so, then Talk training may be able to support you with funding through the Young Recruits Programme.
