What is National Apprenticeship Week and why it might change your life

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is an annual, week-long event, this year taking place from February 5th to 11th, 2024. NAW shines a spotlight on the transformative power of apprenticeships, fostering connections between learners, employers, and the wider community. The theme of this years apprenticeship week is #SkillsforLife

But what exactly is NAW, and what is the purpose of holding a nationwide event?

NAW stands as a vibrant event in the calendar with the aim of up-skilling current and new employees, unlocking potential within the workforce and igniting new careers.

The overall purpose of NAW includes the following:

  • Promoting awareness: Showcasing the vast array of apprenticeship options across diverse industries, dispelling myths and highlighting the dynamic opportunities on offer.
  • Celebrating success: Recognise the achievements of current and past apprentices, inspiring others to embark on this rewarding journey.
  • Connecting people: Bridging the gap between learners and employers, facilitating the discovery of talents and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Championing skills: Emphasising the critical role apprenticeships play in building a skilled workforce equipped for the future.

NAW comes alive with a full week of engaging events:

  • Open days and workshops: Dive deep into specific industries, gain firsthand insights from training providers and employers, and try your hand at practical activities.
  • Career fairs and networking events: Explore a broad range of apprenticeship opportunities, connect with industry professionals, and network with like-minded individuals.
  • Live talks and panel discussions: Gain valuable insights from experienced apprentices, employers, and training providers through interactive sessions and Q&A opportunities.
  • Online resources and information portals: Access a wealth of information, browse apprenticeship listings, and discover support services at your fingertips.

What are the Benefits for Learners?

Apprenticeships offer a unique blend of learning whilst in employment, we often term this ‘earn while you learn’, providing numerous advantages for learners:

  • Earn while you learn: Gain valuable work experience and earn a salary while acquiring industry-recognised qualifications.
  • Hands-on experience: Develop practical skills and build confidence through on-the-job training and mentorship.
  • Fast-track your career: Gain an edge in the job market with relevant experience and qualifications, propelling you towards your career goals.
  • No university debt: Avoid the financial burden of university fees while still achieving your career aspirations.
  • Personal growth: Develop self-reliance, teamwork, and critical thinking skills in a supportive environment.

What are the Benefit for Employers?

Apprenticeships provide employers with significant advantages:

  • Tailored talent: Recruit and train motivated individuals with the specific skills and knowledge your business needs.
  • Increased productivity: Integrate new talent seamlessly into your team, boosting productivity and innovation.
  • Welsh Government incentives: Take advantage of financial support and apprenticeship funding via fully funded apprenticeships
  • Workforce development: Apprenticeships are a great way to offer career development opportunities for staff. This often helps retain employees and develops employees who are invested in your company’s success.
