Skillbuild is a Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) funded programme that prepares 16-18 year old learners for work. Learners are referred to us through the Careers Service. The programme covers an in-depth assessment to identify each learner’s ability and career aspirations, together with centre based training and employment placement experience. A Skillbuild course normally lasts at least 13 weeks and we hope that by the end of the programme our learners will be ready to make some good decisions about their future and be able to start making a success of their working lives.
Our Learning Centres in Wales are located in Cwmbran and Blackwood.
Training programme covers:
City and Guilds Key Skill’s Level 1 in:
- Problem Solving
- Communications
- Application of number
- Working with others
- Improving own learning
- I.T.
Learners who successfully complete the Basic Skills programme can progress to undertake an NVQ Level 1 in subjects such as Business Administration, Customer Service, Information Technology, etc.
Work placements (Job Tasters)
Through our partnerships with local businesses, learners can gain work experience in practical skills, work environments, job attitude, etc. We still work closely with our learners while they are on placement to help them complete their training programme, with an aim to progressing to achieving an NVQ Level 1 in their chosen subject. Our assessors visit them in the work place regularly, continually building on their skills and keeping a record of all the new abilities they are gaining. In a number of cases, we are proud to say, the companies, in which we have placed our learners, have been so impressed that they have offered our learners full time jobs with them.
